When is Guru Purnima 2022: According to the Hindu calendar, the festival of Guru Purnima is celebrated on the full moon date of the month of Ashadha. It falls in the month of July-August on the English calendar. This year, Guru Purnima is falling on Wednesday, the 13th of July 2022.

In India, a Guru is hailed as someone who not only imparts education but also inculcates values and teaches essential life lessons. Therefore, there is a day dedicated to honouring those whose blessings we receive in the form of wisdom, learning or skills. And this day is called Guru Purnima, a festival that falls in Gregorian July.

The day of Guru Purnima is celebrated as knowing the importance of ‘Guru’ or teacher. That is why it is also called Vyas Purnima. According to Shiv Purana, on this day in the 18th Dwapar, Ved Vyas Ji, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, was born. Ved Vyas had also composed eighteen Puranas and texts including Mahabharata. Of these texts, Shrimad Bhagwat Mahapuran is considered to be the largest.

Every year, Guru Purnima is celebrated with great enthusiasm and devotion by Buddhist-influenced countries like India, Nepal, Bhutan, etc. On the occasion of Guru Purnima, people pay reverence and respect to their Gurus (teachers) through different ways like offering prayers, observing fasts, chanting mantras, performing special rituals, and so on. In fact, different people have different ways of celebrating Guru Purnima. Some monasteries & ashrams hold special rituals like prayer recitals by students to pay homage to their Gurus.
