VA Dental Insurance Program: The VA Dental Insurance Program, or VADIP, helps some veterans and their family members get dental insurance from private companies at lower group rates. A lot of people believe dental care is automatically part of VA health care, but that is not always the case.
This program is not free. It is a voluntary insurance plan. That means if you qualify, you can choose to buy it and pay a monthly premium. It is handled by private insurance companies, not directly by the VA. Currently, the plans are offered by Delta Dental and MetLife. These companies give different plan choices, so people can pick what fits their needs and budget.

The plans usually cover simple care like checkups, cleanings and X-rays. They can also cover bigger treatments like fillings and crowns and root canals. Some plans even include orthodontics. The exact coverage depends on which plan a person selects.
Who Qualifies for VADIP?
Not everyone can join this program. The rules are clear. According to official program guidelines, “one of these must be true” in order to enroll in VADIP. First, you must be a veteran who is enrolled in VA health care.
This point is very important. Just being a veteran is not enough. A veteran must already be signed up for VA health care to qualify. If a veteran is not enrolled in VA health care, they cannot use VADIP.
There is another way to qualify. A person may be eligible if they are the current or surviving spouse or dependent child of a veteran or service member and are enrolled in the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs, known as CHAMPVA. Only family members who are officially enrolled in CHAMPVA can apply. If a spouse or child is not part of CHAMPVA, they cannot join VADIP.
For veterans, the first step is to enroll in VA health care.
- They can apply online, by phone or in person.
- After they are accepted, they can choose to buy dental insurance through VADIP.
- They must pay monthly premiums and also cover any deductibles or copayments.

Some veterans may already qualify for direct dental care from the VA because of service-connected disabilities, former prisoner-of-war status or other special reasons. VADIP is mostly for those who do not qualify for full dental care from the VA but still want affordable insurance.
Costs
The cost of VADIP depends on where a person lives, which plan they choose and whether they want coverage just for themselves or for their family. Even though members must pay each month, the plans are negotiated at the federal level. Because of that, the prices are often more competitive than many regular dental insurance plans sold on the open market.
