On May 25, 2020, when a video of George Floyd being restrained by police went online, four former police officers were prosecuted. Thao was among the group. Later, Chauvin was convicted guilty of murder and manslaughter for his role in the death of George Floyd. J. Kueng and Thomas Lane, the other two police officers tasked with subduing Floyd, were also convicted of state and federal offences related to the incident.
The three-and-a-half-year sentence that Thao received last year from a federal magistrate will run concurrently with his most recent sentence of four years and nine months. George Floyd was involved in the civil rights violation that lead to the federal conviction.
Thao testified in federal court that he believed the other officers were managing Floyd’s situation appropriately and that his primary concern during the incident was crowd control.
