Now both legendary sisters are gone, and people are again looking back at the man who first taught them music.

Deenanath Mangeshkar was born on December 29, 1900, in Mangeshi in Goa. He became known as a strong classical singer, a Natya Sangeet artist, and a major name in Marathi theatre. He had a powerful voice and a deep understanding of Indian classical music. He also acted in musical plays and ran a theatre company. In his time, he had already earned respect as a serious performer and musician long before his daughters became famous.

How He Shaped the Lives of His Daughters

Deenanath played a huge role in the early lives of Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. Because of his work, he travelled a lot in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Lata Mangeshkar was born in Indore on September 28, 1929, and Asha Bhosle was born in Sangli, Maharashtra, on September 8, 1933. From a very young age, both girls were surrounded by music because their father lived and worked in that world every day.

He started teaching his daughters music when they were still very small. He trained them in the basics of classical singing, voice control, and discipline. This early training became the strong base on which both sisters later built their long and unforgettable careers.

They did not grow up learning music only from books or lessons at home. They also saw rehearsals, performances, and real stage life because of their father’s theatre work. That kind of daily exposure helped them learn in a natural and deep way. It also gave them confidence very early in life.

Deenanath’s theatre company also gave the family a life full of travel and live performance. Lata and Asha saw how music worked in real life, how singers prepared, and how stage performances were built.

His Early Death

Deenanath Mangeshkar died on April 24, 1942, when he was only 41 years old. After his death, the family faced major financial trouble. That difficult time changed the lives of the children very quickly. Lata and Asha had to start working early to help support the family. Even though life became very hard, the lessons their father had already given them stayed with them. His training helped them remain focused and keep moving forward.

Lata Mangeshkar was the eldest among the five siblings, and Asha Bhosle was the second eldest. The younger children were Meena Khadikar, Usha Mangeshkar, and Hridaynath Mangeshkar.

Their mother was Shevanti Mangeshkar, who was Deenanath’s second wife. Shevanti later became known as Sudhamati in some family accounts. She died on June 16, 1995. The family that Deenanath left behind went on to become one of the most famous music families in India.
