Frowned over not having a male child in the family, a woman allegedly burnt private parts of her four-year-old granddaughter.

The incident is said to have happened 10 days ago in Mojukhera village near Ding town in Haryana’s Sirsa district but came to light on Friday after the district child protection committee officials received a tip-off about this. The victim is the third girl child of her parents.

A case has been registered under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and a probe has been launched into the matter. The girl is being treated at Sirsa civil hospital.

“The victim’s grandmother wanted a baby boy in her family. After seeing the baby girl playing in front of her, she got angry and burnt the child’s private parts using a pair of hot tongs. We have taken up the matter with the police and they will take appropriate action in the case,” said Geeta Kathuria, child protection committee official.

“The girl’s father is a labourer by profession. We summoned him on Thursday but he did not turn up. Then we visited the spot and rescued the girl and rushed her to hospital for treatment,” she said.

According to locals, an elder family member had been physically torturing the child of late.

Deputy superintendent of police (DSP, headquarters) Vijay Kakkar said, “We have registered a case on the complaint of the child protection committee. We will arrest the culprit as soon as we get some leads.”
