Women’s History Month is a month that highlights women’s contribution to global events in history and contemporary society. March 8 is International Women’s Day, celebrated in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia.
History: Women’s History Month
In the United States, Women’s History Month goes back to the first International Women’s Day celebration in 1911. In the 1960s, women began to question their invisibility and exclusion in traditional historical texts.
In 1978, the Education Task Force of the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women in California, organised a week-long celebration of women’s contributions to culture, history and society with participants between class presentations, essays written and a parade in Santa Rosa.
To appreciate women’s contribution to society, the US Congress passed a public law on March 7, 1982, establishing Women’s History Week. Since then, March has been designated as Women’s History Month.
We have come a long way to remember and admire Eleanor Roosevelt’s inspiring career, Maya Angelou’s outlook on justice and voice, the fearless leader of the women’s suffrage movement, and thousands of outstanding role models today. We celebrate the achievements and contributions of women in developing our society, and we wish Happy Women’s History Month to all the ladies out there!
