What is World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims?

World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is observed to honor those who have lost their lives or been injured in road crashes, and to reaffirm our commitment to improving road safety for all.

This day provides an opportunity for all of us – individuals, families, communities, businesses and governments – to remember the victims of road traffic crashes and pledge to do more to prevent these tragedies from happening.

In 2020, the World Day of Remembrance will be particularly significant as we mark the 10th anniversary of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety. Over the past decade, governments around the world have taken important steps to improve road safety and reduce fatalities. But much more needs to be done.

The theme of this year’s World Day of Remembrance is “Restarting action for road safety: Time for results”. It is a call to action for all of us to redouble our efforts to make our roads safer and save lives.

Every day, around the world, some 3,700 people are killed in road crashes – that’s one person every 17 minutes. Many more are seriously injured or disabled. The vast majority of these crashes are preventable.

Road traffic injuries are a major public health problem and a leading cause of death among young people aged 15-29 years. They are also a growing problem among older adults aged 70 years and over.

History of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

Since the first World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims was observed in 1993, this day has been held on the third Sunday of November to remember the millions of people who have been killed or injured on the world’s roads.

The day also serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety, and calls for action to make our roads safer for everyone.

Each year, around 1.35 million people are killed in road crashes, and millions more are seriously injured. Road traffic crashes are a leading cause of death among young people aged 15-29 years.

In many countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States of America, November is designated as National Young Driver Safety Month. This is an opportunity to raise awareness about the risks faced by young drivers and to promote safe driving behaviours.
