World Hydrography Day 2025

World Hydrography Day 2025: World Hydrography Day is celebrated every year to help people understand how important hydrography is. In 2025, this special day will be observed on a Saturday. The goal of this day is to make people aware of how hydrography helps in many important things like safe navigation in the ocean, coastal area development, protecting the environment, and even managing disasters like floods.

Hydrography is a  science that studies water. It helps us know how deep a river, lake, or ocean is and how the water moves or flows in those places. People use a type of chart or graph called a hydrograph to study these things. A hydrograph shows how much water is flowing at a certain point in a river or stream over time.

The line goes up when rainwater or other water enters the river. When the graph reaches the highest point, it means the river has the most water flowing. Then when the water level goes down, the graph also comes down, showing that the river is going back to its normal level.

World Hydrography Day History

It started because people saw the need to give attention to the people and science behind water mapping. The International Hydrographic Organization was first formed in 1921 and was then called the International Hydrographic Bureau. It gave countries a space to talk about making travel safer on the ocean, sharing good standards, and looking after the ocean environment.

Later in 1970, the group changed its name to the International Hydrographic Organization or IHO. In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly agreed that June 21 should be marked as World Hydrography Day every year. The first celebration took place in 2006. Since then, every year, hydrographers around the world take part in the event and show the importance of their work.

World Hydrography Day 2025 Theme

Each year the day comes with a new theme. For 2025, the official theme has not been announced yet. But this year’s focus is expected to talk about the past, present, and future of hydrography. The day will also shine a light on how hydrography has helped over the last 100 years and how it will stay important in the future too.

People from everywhere are welcome to take part in the celebration. National hydrographic offices, science experts, industry partners, and others can join by showing their work, sharing ideas, and even creating videos, photos, or articles. These can be sent to the IHO Secretariat to be posted online. This helps spread the message to more people around the world.
