World Kidney Day 2020: Every year, World Kidney Day is observed on March 12. The aim is to focus on the importance of kidneys to overall health. This day also tries to spread awareness about different types of kidney diseases and how to prevent these.

This year World Kidney Day continues to raise awareness of the increasing burden of kidney diseases worldwide and to strive for kidney health for everyone, everywhere. Specifically, the 2020 campaign highlights the importance of preventive interventions to avert the onset and progression of kidney disease.

In 2020, World Kidney Day calls on everyone to advocate for concrete measures in every country to promote and advance kidney disease prevention, including:

  • Renewed focus on primary care, awareness raising and education including patient empowerment and cross-specialty training
  • Integration of CKD prevention into national NCD programs for comprehensive and integrated services, which are essential in improving the early detection and tracking of CKD at country level
  • Whole-of-government, whole-of-society, health in all policies, multisectoral collaboration to promote prevention of kidney disease

Kidney stones are hard deposits that form inside the kidneys. A kidney stone can cause severe pain in the side and back, below the ribs.

Some of the symptoms of kidney stones may include pain during urination, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, urination more than usual and persistent need to urinate.

Ways to prevent kidney stones:

Intake of a lot of water dilutes your urine, making it difficult for stones to form. Ensure that you drink two litres of water every day, which is around eight glasses.

Keep track of your daily diet. It is advised to remove high oxalate foods from the diet like leafy greens, chocolate, cola, and coffee if you had a calcium oxalate stone in the past. Also, ditch high-urate foods such as meat and seafood.

1. What to eat-

  • Citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruit, kiwi, lemon or pineapple and even you can consume fruits or fruit juice.
  • Good levels of calcium can also help you. Add more dairy to your diet or other sources of calcium legumes, dark green vegetables, nuts and seeds. Therefore, also add vitamin D to your diet for better calcium absorption.
  • It is advised to add plant-based protein to your diet in moderation. Animal-based protein should be strictly avoided.

2. What to avoid-

  • Limit salt: High sodium diet can significantly increase the risk of developing kidney stones. So, avoid consuming too much salt.
  • Avoid animal protein: Adding too much animal-based protein can reduce the levels of chemicals in the urine which prevents kidney stone formation.
