World Oral Health Day 2024: World Oral Health Day is an annual international observance that takes place on March 20. The purpose of the day is to promote awareness regarding proper oral hygiene. Sponsored and promoted by the World Dental Federation, the holiday has established itself as a preeminent platform for dialogue and information exchange regarding oral hygiene and dental care. Dentists and oral hygienists utilize a variety of platforms on this day to inform the public about the importance of good oral hygiene and to elaborate on various treatments.

The History of World Oral Health Day

Texts from ancient Egypt and China indicate that for decades, cultures have recognized the significance of maintaining excellent oral hygiene. From the utilization of rudimentary implements such as feathers, fish bones, or porcupine quills, to the marginally more sophisticated application of tree bark, oral health has been a fundamental concern across all cultures.

By the 1400s, individuals in China had adopted the practice of affixing bristles obtained from swine adapted to cold climates onto wood or bone to fashion toothbrushes. Simultaneously, in Europe, a solution comprising salt, cognac, and water was employed as a mouth rinse. Following this, a toothbrush was scrubbed with a sponge to eliminate any debris lodged between the teeth.

Thus, despite the progress achieved in the field of oral health, there were instances where the majority of individuals were indifferent to the importance of maintaining proper oral hygiene. Emerging were illnesses for which there was no known treatment. Before 1880, when nurses began administering prophylactic treatments to prevent disease, maladies were historically treated with traditional herbs.

Dentists, who utilized specialized dental techniques to treat oral and dental conditions, emerged shortly thereafter. F.D.I., or Federation Dentaire International, has been the most outspoken advocate for oral health awareness. Since its inception more than a century ago, the organization has advocated for and underscored the significance of oral health and sanitation.

Their efforts to raise awareness regarding the significance of practicing proper oral hygiene were rewarded in 2013 with the proclamation of the inaugural worldwide day to be observed as World Oral Health Day.
Since 2013, Oral Health Day has been observed annually under a particular theme.

Healthy Teeth for a Healthy Life was the initial theme, and 2014 also featured a distinct theme. Each of these themes has revolved around a distinct message for the calendar year. They are progressively and consistently raising people’s awareness so that they will begin to value oral hygiene.
