World Post Day history and significance

The first postal document was discovered in Egypt during 255 BC. Then in the 17th and 18th centuries, the postal agreements used to govern the exchange of mail amongst countries. Later by the 19th century, it became difficult as it affected negatively the trade and commercial development of countries. Now the need arose for making it simple at the international level.

It is observed on October 9 in remembrance of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland. In 1969, the UPU Congress declared this day in Tokyo, Japan. The UPU focused on the global communications revolution, with the aim that people could write to others all over the world.
