World Pulses Day 2025 Theme: Pulses are an important part of a healthy diet because they contain protein, fibre, vitamins, and minerals. They are not only good for health but also help the environment. To spread awareness about their benefits, people around the world observe World Pulses Day every year on February 10.
This special day was created by the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) to highlight the role of pulses in global food security. Pulses include dry beans, lentils, chickpeas, dry peas, and lupins, which are widely consumed in many countries.

World Pulses Day 2025 Theme
The United Nations General Assembly officially declared February 10 as World Pulses Day on December 20, 2018. The purpose of this day is to educate people about the importance of pulses and how they contribute to sustainable agriculture and nutrition.
It is also connected to the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which aims to improve global living conditions and promote peace. Every year, World Pulses Day follows a different theme. For 2025, the theme is “Pulses: Bringing Diversity to Agrifood Systems.”
The focus this year is on how pulses add variety to food production and help make farming more sustainable. Growing pulses and including them in daily meals can create a fairer and healthier future.
Pulses: Bringing diversity to agrifood systems
These crops support diversity in different ways. Farmers benefit because pulses allow them to grow different kinds of plants, which helps maintain a natural balance in agriculture. There are more than 100 types of pulses, giving farmers plenty of options for crop rotation and mixed farming. Consumers also gain because pulses are rich in protein and cost less compared to other protein sources.

Pulses also benefit the environment. Since they belong to the legume family, they naturally improve soil quality. The roots of pulses contain special bacteria that add nitrogen to the soil, making it more fertile without the need for artificial fertilisers. This is why they are an important part of crop rotation, as they help maintain soil health for future farming.
They also provide a good source of income for farmers in both developing and developed countries. As a cash crop, pulses help farmers earn money while ensuring people have access to affordable, nutritious food. Pulses are also very versatile. They can be made into flour for baking or used to prepare protein-based drinks
Basic Importance of Pulses
- Protein: Pulses are a great source of protein, especially for vegetarians. They contain 19–25 per cent protein
- Fibre: Pulses are high in fibre, which helps keep blood sugar and insulin levels healthy.
- Vitamins and Minerals: Pulses provide important vitamins and minerals like zinc, folate, and magnesium.
- Antioxidants: Pulses contain substances that act as antioxidants, helping to fight cancer and other diseases.
- Heart Health: Pulses can improve cholesterol levels and lower the risk of heart disease.
- Nitrogen Fixing: Pulses are legumes with bacteria in their roots that help make the soil more fertile.
- Sustainable Food Source: Pulses were one of the first crops grown by humans and have been farmed for thousands of years.
- Cash Crops: Pulses are valuable crops for farmers, providing income in both rich and poor countries.
- Crop Rotation: Pulses are an important part of crop rotation practices.
