World Tb-303 Appreciation Day 2024: World TB-303 Appreciation Day is appropriately observed annually on March 30. Although it sounds like an automobile, the TB-303 is not a vehicle. Or an illness. Moreover, this is not a “Star Wars” character. It is even superior! The now-legendary Roland TB-303 bass synthesiser was instrumental in the evolution of the electronic music we know and adore. This bad boy essentially laid the groundwork for dance music for decades to come. What are you expecting? Exhibit your finest dance moves and groove to the unending beat!
HISTORY OF WORLD TB-303 APPRECIATION DAY
Tadao Kikumoto, who also created the Roland TR-909 drum machine, created the Roland TB-303 Bass Line, also known as the 303 or the Transistor Bass-303. It was advertised as an automated bass generator.
Kikumoto desired to construct a device that could reproduce the sound of an electric bass guitar for solo musicians to practise with and even perform with. Unfortunately, it was deemed a failure and production ceased shortly thereafter. As a result of the discontinuation, these machines became much more affordable, and many aspiring electronic music producers who desired to experiment with new sounds acquired them. It was acquired by the Chicago-based acid house music group Phuture, who experimented with the synthesiser and began creating music that had never been heard before. They released the now-classic, genre-defining track “Acid Tracks,” which is credited with devising and defining the genre. When D.J. Ron Hardy played the song for the first time in a Chicago nightclub, he pretty much blew everyone’s imaginations.
After its heyday in the ’80s, artists continued to challenge the sound in the ’90s by adding rougher edges to their compositions to create alien-like noises, eventually transforming it into the Acid House genre of techno music.
Today, the original 303 costs over one thousand pounds. Roland continues to reimagine its technology, issuing the TB-3 Touch Bassline synthesiser in 2014 despite the machine’s continued success. The 303 has become a staple for DJs around the globe because it is portable and, well, that’s what the people want!
