Bombay High Court rejects Abu Salem's plea for parole to get married

The Terrorist and Disruptive Activity (TADA) court on Thursday sentenced convicts Abu Salem and Karimullah Khan to life imprisonment in the 1993 Mumbai blast case. The other two convicts, Tahir Merchant and Feroz Khan were awarded death sentence by the court. Convict, Riyaz Siddiqui was sentenced to 10 years in jail.

Series of  blasts in the city killed almost 257 and left more than 713 injured on March 12, 1993.

The convicts have been given sentences for different offences.

The court had convicted six people, including the mastermind of the 1993 serial blasts Mustafa Dossa and Abu Salem on June 2017. However, it had to let off accused Abdul Quayyum, for want of proof. The accused were facing multiple charges including criminal conspiracy, waging war against the government and killing.

Earlier, the court had held that prosecution proved Salem was one of the key conspirators. He delivered three AK-56 rifles and ammunition and hand grenades to actor Sanjay Dutt. Dutt was convicted in earlier phase of trial under the Arms Act.

The trial of Salem, Mustafa Dossa, Karimullah Khan, Firoz Abdul Rashid Khan, Riyaz Siddiqui, Tahir Merchant and Abdul Quayyum was separated from the main case. Dossa died of cardiac arrest shortly after being convicted on 28 June.
