The nationwide lockdown due to coronavirus has affected the lives of migrant labourers and daily wage workers the most. A 24-year-old Sudhir Singh, hanged himself on May 16. He is the resident of Rameshwar Colony, Sachin GIDC, and native of Banda district in Uttar Pradesh.
In three different incidents, 3 labourers committed suicide on May 16.

According to the police, Sudhir stayed with a couple of roommates including a distant relative, Amar Singh. On May 15 while everyone slept on the terrace, he had gone to sleep in his room. The body was discovered by Amar the next morning. As per the reports, Sudhir was working in the dyeing and printing mill from the past three years.
In the second incident, a 60-year-old Shubhash Prajapati committed suicide by hanging himself at his house on May 16. Shubhash was a resident of Parvat Patia in Surat who was living alone. The incident came to light the next day, when neighbours had spotted Prajatapati’s body and informed his relative, Sunil Chauhan. According to Chauhan, “He was working at a construction site. Since the last two months, he did not have a job and was facing financial problems… During the lockdown, he might have been depressed.”
In the third incident, a 55-year-old Rohidas Lingayat, resident of Rushinagar in Limbayat area of the city, worked at an auto garage and allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself on May 16. According to the police, he had gone to his room to take a nap after lunch. After one-and-a-half hours, his wife knocked on the door but had failed to open it and later discovered his body.
