Gujjars turn down government's proposal for talks; trains, recruitment exams cancelled

Sawai Madhopur: Gujjar community rejected the state government’s proposal for talks and continued their dharna on tracks at Maksudanpura. Rail traffic on the Delhi-Mumbai route continued to be affected on the second day of the Gujjar agitation for quota.

The Gujjar Dharna on rail tracks led to the cancellation of 12 trains and diversions of 22 trains after state government’s failed attempt to get the agitators for talks. The recruitment test for Anganwadi supervisors, scheduled to be held in Ajmer on Sunday was postponed by the state government amidst the dharna protest by Gujjars.

The state government was also forced to postpone the Rajasthan Staff Selection Board’s recruitment test for agriculture supervisors, which was to be held in Kota and Jaipur on Sunday.

On Saturday, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who was in Delhi, appealed to the agitators to vacate the tracks and asked to submit a memo to PM. He said, “Their demands can only be met after amendments to the Constitution. So, they should submit a memo to the prime minister,” as quoted by TOI.

Gujjar Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti head Col Kirori Singh Bainsla, who is also leading the agitation, blamed government by saying, “The government should have given us long back what had been promised,” TOI mentioned.

In Maksudanpura (Sawai Madhopur), a delegation had met Bainsla and others on Saturday evening, urging them to hold talks at a nearby venue. The delegation comprises cabinet minister Vishvendra Singh and IAS Neeraj K Pawan.

Singh tried to convince the agitators that the state government was sensitive about their demand for five per cent reservation under the Most Backward Classes (MBCs). However, Bainsla demanded the government to send its representatives with official documents approving the quota and rejected Singh’s proposal.
