Each year, since 1961, everyone across the globe celebrates the World Meteorological Day on March 23. This day is observed every year to attract attention towards weather and climate for the safety and well-being of the society.

The celebration of this day each year comes out with new and different themes to reflect topical weather, climate or water-related issues.

The theme of World Meteorological Day 2020 is “climate and water”, which is consistent with the theme of World Water Day 2020. On this day every year, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), its membership of 193 States and Territories, and the worldwide meteorological community, celebrate the day around a chosen theme.

World Meteorological Day History:

The World Meteorological Day is celebrated each year on March 23 to commemorate the entry into force in 1950 of the convention that created the World Meteorological Organization. The organization announces a World Meteorological Day slogan every year and celebrates it in all member countries.

Every year on or around March 23, the United Nations holds World Meteorological Day to commemorate the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization on that day in 1950.

 World Meteorological Day 2020 Theme:

A new theme is assigned to World Meteorological Day in each different year. The theme of World Meteorological Day 2020 is “climate and water”.

The purpose is to manage climate and water issues in a more coordinated and sustainable manner because they are inextricably linked. Both are at the core of global goals for sustainable development, climate change and disaster risk reduction.

In 2021, the theme of World Meteorological Day will be ‘The ocean, our climate and weather”.

World Meteorological Day Significance:

World Meteorological Day often hosts events such as meetings, symposia and exhibitions for meteorological professionals, community leaders and the public. Several events have been held worldwide to raise the profile of the media to raise awareness of meteorology. The day also highlighted the contribution of the National Meteorological and Hydrological Service to social security and well-being.
