Rape-convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s counsels have pleaded before the Punjab and Haryana high court that the Dera chief cannot pay Rs 30 lakh fine to rape survivor as he has renounced the world.
According to The Indian Express, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Sudhir Mittal admitted the self-styled Godman’s appeal against his conviction in twin rape cases, for which he is currently in prison. His lawyer told the bench that Dera properties have been attached; hence he cannot pay the fine. However, the court dismissed his pleas, and has ordered him to pay the money within the given time.
He was pronounced guilty in two separate rape cases by a special CBI court. He has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the same. 41 people had died after his supporters created a ruckus in Panchkula and Sirsa after his conviction.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim is serving his sentence in Rohtak’s Suneria jail.
