HS Doreswamy Birth Anniversary: In 1942, Mahatma Gandhi directed the Quit India movement against the British. At that time, the Indian youth circle demonstrated the strength of their unity. This inspiring movement touched the hearts of thousands of young people in Bengaluru, who responded to the appeal. Harohalli Srinivasaiah Doreswamy, a 24-year-old graduate, was present when police detained KF Nariman, president of the Mumbai State Congress Party, at Banappa Park. Motivated by this experience, he chose to devote himself to social work. The following day, Doreswamy and his companions staged a protest against the oppressiveness of the public authority at their institute. As chants of “Bharat Mata ki Jai,” “Mahatma Gandhi ki Jai,” and “Down with the police” reverberated through the school quad by them, the police rushed in and a lathi-charge commenced.
To undermine the British Raj, he decided to target official archives with low-level bombs placed in receptacles and record rooms. As a consequence, he was imprisoned for subversive activities until 1943, when he was released. That was the first time HS Doreswamy dissented.
Even at the venerable age of 100, he never slowed down in his pursuit of the authentic opportunity he and his contemporaries had fought for all those years prior. “We had lofty expectations. We anticipated that poverty would vanish after the Declaration of Independence and we believed there would be no racial prejudice. Nevertheless, 30 percent of our population still lives below the poverty line, as this deceivingly frail-looking figure indicates. As remarkable is Doreswamy’s influence, as referenced by the state Energy Minister: “Mr. Doreswamy fought for the liberation of this country and was a prisoner during the Independence War. HS Doreswamy: Early years in brief
Doroswamy was born in the former kingdom of Mysore at Harohalli. His grandfather Shamana brought him after his parents passed away when he was five years old. He had an older brother named ‘Seetharam,’ who was a candidate for the position of civic chairman of Bangalore in autonomous India. Grandfather was a municipal accountant and elected official. Doreswamy completed his elementary education in his hometown and then moved to Bangalore to pursue his secondary education. He attended the Government Intermediate College of Bangalore for his secondary education and the Central College of Bangalore for his bachelor’s degree in science. Doreswamy addressed numerous issues in his lifetime, ranging from his opposition to the Kaiga nuclear power facility in north Karnataka to ranchers’ land rights. Doreswamy and Gauri Lankesh, the assassinated writer in 2014, were part of a phase that assisted Naxalites in returning to normalcy. He was a member of the Indian autonomy movement and turned 100 years old in April 2018. He was also a writer and published the newspaper Paura Vani, which advocated for a liberated India.
His final missions were in opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the bill’s contentious ranchers’ bill. In March of 2020, a controversial political tempest engulfed Doreswamy. Basangouda Patil Yatnal, a BJP MLA from Bijapur, viewed him as a “fake political dissident” and a “Pakistani expert” and sought substantiation of his membership in the Independence movement. Doreswamy responded, “In terms of ideology, I am not affiliated with any entity. Due to my legislative stance, they wish to exclude me from future developments. This is their way of thinking, and as a result, I am in excruciating agony.”

A refined sense of humour devoid of political influence
Doreswamy, however, was a vivacious, humorous individual. In general, activists can be quite solemn and critical. This radiance in his expressions could not be ignored. He could communicate with anyone, regardless of age. His political views on Hindu-Muslim harmony and opposition to the debasement of any ideology were particularly admirable. Doreswamy never interacted with government officials, whereas numerous journalists would seize the opportunity to be seen with the rich and famous. He was regarded as Karnataka’s beating pulse.
Doreswamy’s dependence on mobile phones was minimal. Typically, he carried a small notepad in which he recorded the names of people he encountered, their phone numbers, and the reason he met them. Whenever he was convinced your motivation was genuine, he remained by your side. He was prepared to command battles and energise at any time and location. At no point did Doreswamy desire power or position. He is still a deeply ingrained rebel who has accepted that ceaseless caution is the price of opportunity. He was most irritated by the progressive officials who came to power and governed the country, regardless of their party affiliation.

Doraswamy participated in India’s independence movement, and he protested the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) until the previous year. Doreswamy married Lalithamma, a 19-year-old woman, in 1950, and the couple subsequently had two children.
The loss of his spouse in 2019 left him with one son, one daughter, and three grandchildren. Doreswami was 103 years old when he was diagnosed with Covid 19 in May of 2021. However, he recovered within a week and returned. Unfortunately, his previous cardiac and asthma conditions, along with his Covid issues, caused him to return to the clinic the next day.
