National Jenny Day 2023: History

Jennifer can be shortened to Jenny. ‘Gwenhwyfar’ (Guinevere) is a Welsh name composed of the elements ‘gwen’ (fair) and ‘hwyfar’ (smooth), and ‘Jennifer’ (Jennifer) is the Cornish equivalent. Last but not least, the names Guinevere and Jennifer are taken to mean “the fair one.” Jenny eventually came to mean “little pretty one” in this context.

The name Guinevere is synonymous with the heroic figure in Celtic mythology. Guinevere, the most beautiful woman on Earth, was unfaithful to King Arthur after she fell in love with Sir Lancelot, bringing chaos to the peaceful kingdom of Camelot. She, like so many other ladies in Celtic mythology, valued pleasure above all else. Like the Welsh, the Cornish are Celts, but their language is separate from the Gaelic tongues of Ireland and Scotland, therefore they came up with the name Jennifer as a version of Guinevere.

In the twentieth century, Jennifer was rediscovered by the English, and its popularity quickly spread throughout all English-speaking countries. Jennifer has several shortened forms, including Jen and Jenny. However, Jenny has also been used as a first name on its own. In the present day, Jenny is one of the top 25 most popular names in Norway.
