Tax Season Unveiled

ITR Refund: As of the 31st of July, the deadline for filing an income tax return (ITR) without incurring a penalty for the financial year 2022-2023 had passed, and taxpayers are now need to wait for their refunds. Approximately 6.77 billion individual income tax returns were submitted up until the very last day, of which 5.62 billion have also been confirmed. The Department of Income Tax has even processed 3.44 crore individual tax returns (ITRs), which indicates that many of individuals have already received their refunds.

Notably, an income tax return must be submitted in order to claim a refund in the event that the taxes paid are greater than the actual tax due.

When should taxpayers anticipate receiving their ITR refunds?

The ITR reimbursement is typically processed anywhere from seven to one hundred and twenty days from the date the return was submitted. The typical amount of time required to process refunds has greatly shrunk as a result of developments in information technology and the move towards online processing.

How do I check the progress of my refund?

Income tax assessees are able to check the status of their tax refunds online by using the income tax e-filing website (incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in) or the e-governance website of National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) (tin.tin.nsdl.com). Both of these websites are hosted by National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL).

Follow these procedures to verify the status of your ITR using the website for the income tax:

  • First, navigate to www.incometax.gov.in on your web browser and log in to your account there by providing your user ID (PAN) and password.
  •  After logging in, select the ‘e-file’ menu item from the drop-down menu.
  • Click on ‘View Filed returns’ after selecting ‘Income tax returns’ from the drop-down menu.
  • Check the most recent ITR that was submitted
  • After selecting the ‘View Details’ option, you will be presented with information regarding the status of the ITR that was filed.

Users of the website tin.tin.nsdl.com need to provide their Permanent Account Number (PAN) in addition to selecting the appropriate assessment year in order to monitor the status of their income tax returns through the website. The current status will be displayed. The status of’refund paid’ is also recorded in the ‘tax credit statements’ contained inside Form 26AS.

Where can taxpayers go to get their money back?

The manner in which the assessee chooses to receive their tax refund when submitting their yearly ITR determines whether they receive it electronically, in the form of a direct credit to their account, or in the form of a refund cheque.

Why is the ITR refund taking so long?

There are circumstances in which the ITR refund might be held up due to various causes. Some of these are as follows:

Incorrect information on the taxpayer’s bank account There is a possibility that the taxpayer did not include the correct bank account number or other bank details when they filed their income tax return (ITR).

Need for further paperwork or information The need for extra evidence or information is one of the most prevalent reasons why people do not receive refunds. There is a possibility that taxpayers forgot to mention any information when they filed their ITR.

Invented information: In order to qualify for a benefit, taxpayers may have provided inaccurate or created information on their tax returns. In order to correct the situation, they should offer information that is both complete and pertinent in order to lessen the likelihood of the refund process being rejected or delayed.

Mismatch in the TDS/TCS claimed: The mismatch in TDS claimed in 26AS could be due to the improper filing of TDS return by the employer or TDS deductor (such as a bank or other financial institution), and taxpayers may need to approach them to correct their TDS return. Alternatively, the mismatch could be due to an error in the taxpayer’s own calculations.

Refund request now being processed; the delay may also be attributable to the level of the income tax department. It is possible that the processing of the request will take some time, or there may even be a delay on the part of the bank.

ITR Filing Last Date 2023: What to Do if You Missed the July 31 Deadline?

What should be done in the event that the reimbursement is delayed?

Taxpayers should verify their listed email to see if the Income Tax Department has attempted to contact them and request a response if they have received any correspondence from the department. In such a scenario, it is essential to get back to the sender of the email as soon as possible. If the status of the refund on the ITR indicates that it has been exhausted, this indicates that the claim for the refund has not been submitted for payment within the allotted time period of ninety days. In this scenario, the taxpayer has the option of submitting a request to have the refund reissued.

In the event that the return was submitted digitally, the request for the reissue of the refund can be made online by logging into the electronic filing site with the user ID and password.

If the status displays as “returned,” the taxpayer can be asked to provide updated bank information and request a new refund through the e-filing portal or the assessing officer if the status displays as “returned.”
