Membership for Ukraine Tied to Territorial Concessions to Russia: Director of the Private Office of the NATO Secretary General Stian Jensen presented a bold perspective on Ukraine’s prospective NATO membership.
As a means of gaining NATO membership, he suggested that the Ukraine might contemplate ceding certain disputed territories.
“I believe the solution may be for Ukraine to cede territory in exchange for NATO membership. “At the same time, the Ukraine must decide for itself when and under what conditions it wishes to negotiate,” he was quoted as saying by the Verdens Gang newspaper.
As reported by the Russian news agency TASS, in regards to the territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia, Jensen stated that such a decision should be autonomously made by Ukraine while respecting its sovereignty and the conditions it considers appropriate for negotiations.

Delicate equilibrium
Jensen acknowledged the intricacy of the situation and emphasised that Ukraine’s post-conflict status is currently being negotiated.
He clarified that the issue of ceding territories to Russia has been broached, but refrained from asserting that this course of action should be pursued with certainty.
The idea of exchanging territorial concessions for NATO membership was presented as a potential solution as opposed to a mandate.
