A video posted by the news agency ANI on X, formerly known as Twitter, shows a man installing a spring in the ceiling of one of the rooms and demonstrating a mechanism that causes the ceiling fan to break and collapse when a person attempts to hang from it.

“Spring-loaded fans have been installed in all hostels and paying guest (PG) accommodations in Kota to reduce the number of student suicides,” stated the video’s caption.

People were quick to offer their opinions, requesting a focus on mental health and a reduction in academic burden for Kota students preparing for competitive exams.

Concerning figures

This year, twenty students have taken their own lives in Kota, raising concerns about the mental health of JEE and NEET aspirants studying at the coaching centre for competitive exams.

The most recent suicide occurred on Tuesday, when an 18-year-old JEE aspirant from Bihar hanged himself in his pg room in Mahaveer Nagar. This was the fourth suicide in the month of August.
