Slovenia Independence Day 2023: Slovenia celebrates Independence Day annually on December 26. It is observed as an observance of the day on which the Slovenian independence referendum was declared official in 1990. The referendum in question was conducted three days prior, on December 23, and it was decided in favor of the establishment of an independent Slovene state by 95% of the electorate. Originally referred to as Independence Day, the occasion underwent a nomenclature change in 2005 in response to a proposal by the Social Democrats to incorporate a reference to the Slovene people’s national unity exhibited throughout the referendum.
Slovenia Independence Day History
Slovenia is a country situated in central Europe, sharing its borders with Croatia, Italy, Austria, and Hungary. It was initially inhabited around 250,000 years ago. In addition to one of the most ancient wooden wheels, the earliest musical instrument was discovered in Slovenia. The region presently recognized as Slovenia was under the governance of the Roman Empire and experienced Hun and Germanic tribe invasions in the fifth and sixth centuries, respectively. After the Lombards abandoned the Alpine region, Slavic tribes started to gradually establish themselves there. They were compelled to establish a settlement there due to Avar pressure. A multitude of Germanic nations ruled Slovenia before the decisive victory of Charlemagne over the majority of them in battle. By the end of the Middle Ages, peasant revolts, Turkish incursions, and other adversities had befallen Slovenian territory.
Slovenian nationalist sentiments began to resurface in the nineteenth century, and the concept of a unified Slovenia began to acquire traction. Subsequently, the Axis powers annexed the larger kingdom of Yugoslavia, into which Slovenia was subsequently submerged. Following World War II, Slovenia remained a province of Yugoslavia.
In 1990, Slovenian independence was formally declared through a referendum. Originally referred to as Independence Day, the current commemoration is known as Independence and Unity Day.
