Unbeknownst to some, Kamala Harris, the inaugural African American woman to hold the position of Vice President in the United States, is an A.K.A. sister. Do you not believe that this sorority merits a day of recognition? We most certainly do!
The History of Alpha Kappa Alpha Day
Since the early twentieth century, January 15 has been observed annually as Alpha Kappa Alpha Day. The historical account of the day’s festivities corresponds to the formation of the sorority. Since more than a century ago, this day has been observed annually.
Established on January 15, 1908, A.K.A. originated at Howard University and reflected the aspiration of a black woman to establish a support system that would enable other black female college students to navigate and succeed academically amidst a college system that was convoluted, unjust, and discriminatory. As a result of Ethel Hedgeman’s struggle for the emancipation of her black college peers at Howard University, the first black female Greek-letter sorority was founded. Although numerous subsequent sororities emerged, A.K.A. boasts an unparalleled historical legacy compared to previously established sororities. One advantage was that it was the first sorority to which African female college students in the United States could relate. Conversely, it exhibits a history of shattering records. It has an estimated membership of more than 300,000 individuals from the United States and other nations at this time.
Among the numerous distinguished alumni of A.K.A. is the renowned black poet Maya Angelou, whose seminal work “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” was published in 1969. Numerous individuals, including Coretta Scott-King, the spouse of Martin Luther King Jr., an activist of the 20th century, Katherine G. Johnson, Phylicia Rashad, and Rosa Parks. By producing a vice president in 2021, A.K.A. became the only female Greek-letter sorority to do so. Kamala Harris is the sole female incumbent of the White House’s second-highest non-emergency office. The aforementioned accomplishments, along with numerous others, contribute to the sorority’s global recognition, which extends beyond the United States to include countries such as Canada, Liberia, Nigeria, South Africa, Japan, and Germany, in addition to South Korea.
