The Kolkata Police on Monday appealed to the public to refrain from spreading misinformation on social media regarding the rape and murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The incident has incited mass protests and a flood of information being exchanged online.
In a statement on Facebook, Kolkata Police highlighted the difficulties they are encountering. “We have noticed that numerous factually incorrect and unverified claims are being disseminated widely on social media. We urge everyone not to share or trust any purported ‘facts’ about the case, as they are baseless rumours,” the police clarified.
The police stressed that such misinformation obstructs the investigative process and impedes justice. “These actions not only hinder the investigation and add to the bereaved family’s distress but also obstruct the pursuit of justice,” Kolkata Police added.
They assured students and doctors of their commitment to delivering swift justice. “We assure the public that our investigation is on the right track, and we will take all necessary steps to file an early charge sheet and facilitate a speedy trial,” the police affirmed.
Earlier, Kolkata Police summoned three junior doctors and a house staff member, who were on duty the night of the incident, to the Kolkata Police headquarters at Lalbazar. The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) had initiated a nationwide strike, mobilizing outside hospitals countrywide to demand justice for the trainee doctor.
Additionally, Prof. (Dr.) Sandip Ghosh, Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has tendered his resignation following demands for his removal by protesting doctors.
