In the early hours of Saturday, the 19168 Sabarmati Express passenger train derailed near Govindpuri station in Kanpur, causing 20 coaches to go off the tracks. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries have been reported.
North Central Railway (NCR) Senior Public Relations Officer Shashikant Tripathi confirmed the derailment occurred around 2.30 am. The train, which was en route from Varanasi to Ahmedabad, came to an abrupt halt due to a loud noise, leading passengers to disembark and wait near the railway tracks for assistance.
According to a Railway Board official, the loco pilot reported that the derailment occurred after a boulder struck the cattle guard portion of the engine, damaging it significantly. Rescue operations are in full swing, with buses and an eight-coach MEMU train sent to ferry passengers back to Kanpur Railway Station, where further arrangements are being made for their onward journeys.
