Housing Markets: The once-thriving US housing market has experienced a noticeable slowdown, with higher mortgage rates, inflated housing appraisals, and limited inventory contributing to the restraint on sales and price increases in many regions.
Despite these challenges, there is no current indication that the market will crash as it did in the early 2000s. The slowdown seems to be more of a market correction than a precursor to a significant downturn, with stabilizing factors helping to prevent a repeat of the past housing crisis. However, a few markets still seem to be headed for a difficult phase.
The following US markets are exhibiting warning indications of serious problems. It’s anyone’s guess as to how long and how deep those troubles will go.

3 Housing Markets That Are in Deep Trouble
Punta Gorda, Florida
The early 2000s property bubble burst, sending Punta Gorda values down more than 47% below peak levels. In Punta Gorda, a city in southwest Florida, it seems history is repeating itself. After experiencing a surge in real estate prices by over 73% during the COVID-19 pandemic boom, the market is now seeing a sharp decline. Prices have already fallen by 9% from their peak in 2022, and according to a Fast Company analysis, they are likely to continue decreasing. This trend reflects a broader market correction following the rapid price increases during the pandemic, suggesting that the market may still have further to adjust.
New Orleans
The property market in New Orleans, Louisiana, has suffered significant harm as a result of rising homeowners insurance prices and excessive mortgage interest rates. A Newsweek study states that closed home sales in June decreased by 24.3% from the same month the previous year.
Although prices in the city are still climbing, analysts predict that later this year they may start to decline.
Austin, Texas
Austin has one of the most popular home markets in the country during the pandemic. A Parcl Labs investigation indicates that the market is currently experiencing “acute distress.”
Sharp declines in demand have resulted in price reductions of more than 30% for some homes. The majority of the adjustment is being felt in Southeast Austin.
