Commuters in Delhi are likely to face significant disruptions in transportation as over 15 auto and cab unions have called for a two-day strike on August 22 and 23. The strike, expected to impact services across the national capital, comes as a protest against the ongoing challenges faced by drivers, who claim that their earnings have plummeted due to unaddressed concerns.

Reasons Behind the Strike

The Delhi Auto Taxi Transport Congress Union, one of the key unions behind the strike, has expressed frustration over the lack of response from both central and state governments, as well as app-based ride-hailing companies like Ola and Uber. Kishan Verma, President of the Union, stated, “We have been seeking relief from the central and state governments as well as from app-based aggregators, but nobody listens to us. Drivers are struggling, so we decided to suspend all services on August 22 and 23.”

According to the union, the primary issue stems from the reduction in drivers’ commissions by app-based aggregators. This has had a significant impact on their livelihoods, with many drivers finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet. Despite multiple appeals to address these concerns, the unions allege that no meaningful action has been taken by the authorities.
