Next solar eclipse: On October 2, 2024, there will be a solar eclipse called an annular eclipse. This event can be seen in parts of the Pacific Ocean, southern Chile, and southern Argentina.
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon comes between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow on our planet. These eclipses are interesting to watch because they happen only during the new moon phase.
In an annular solar eclipse, the moon doesn’t fully cover the sun because it looks a bit smaller. This creates a beautiful “ring of fire” effect. According to Time and Date, only about 175,000 people live in the area where the ring can be seen for this eclipse.

The event will not happen in the continental US, though. People in Hawaii will be able to see a partial eclipse. People in parts of South America, the Pacific Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean will be able to see an annular eclipse.

What is the frequency of a total solar eclipse?
NASA estimates that there can be two or three solar eclipses each year. A total solar eclipse, where the Moon completely blocks the Sun, usually occurs at the same spot on Earth about every eighteen months. However, it’s very rare for two total eclipses to happen in the same place.
According to NASA, it usually takes about 375 years for two total eclipses to occur in the same location, and sometimes this time can be even longer.
Total solar eclipses are rare because they need the Sun, Moon, and Earth to align perfectly.
