Tom Homan: President-elect Donald Trump has named Tom Homan as his “Border Czar” ahead of his second term, set to begin on January 20, 2025. In his announcement, Trump stated that Homan will be responsible for overseeing and managing all U.S. borders, including the Southern and Northern borders, as well as maritime and aviation security. Homan’s duties will also include overseeing the deportation of undocumented immigrants, ensuring they are sent back to their country of origin.
Homan previously served as the acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and has been a prominent figure in advocating for stronger border security. His new role is expected to play a key part in the Trump administration’s broader immigration enforcement strategy during his second term.

Before being named Trump’s “Border Czar,” Tom Homan had a long career in law enforcement, primarily within U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Over 30 years, Homan rose from being a Border Patrol agent to holding top positions at ICE. He served as the acting director of ICE from January 2017 to June 2018 during the first Trump administration.
During his tenure, Homan played a pivotal role in implementing controversial policies, including the “zero tolerance” policy that resulted in family separations at the border. He resigned from his ICE position after his nomination to be confirmed as permanent director failed to advance in the Senate.
In his new role as “Border Czar,” Homan will oversee various aspects of border security and deportation efforts, including implementing Trump’s ambitious immigration policies
Homan has discussed what such a program of mass deportations might entail. He stated that “it would not be a mass sweep of neighborhoods, it’s not going to be building concentration camps” in an October interview with “60 Minutes.” Homan instead promises to target the deportation program.
In an interview with Fox News this Sunday, he reiterated that point. “The men of ICE will be conducting a well-planned and targeted operation,” he stated. Every day, the men and women of ICE carry out this task. They are skilled at it.
It would be a “humane” procedure, he continued. “Of course there is,” he said in response to a question on “60 Minutes” about whether mass deportations could be carried out without separating families. “of course there is. Families can be deported together.”
