When Will You Get the Extra Social Security Money from the Fairness Act?
The Social Security Administration, or SSA, sends out checks every month based on a set rule that follows the person’s birthday. Normally, payments go out on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of each month.
The second Wednesday is for people born between the 1st and 10th. This month, that second Wednesday didn’t come until May 14, which is as late as it can possibly fall on the calendar. So anyone with a birthday from the 1st to the 10th had to wait until the 14th to get their money. Many expected to see their money sooner, but because of this calendar quirk, it arrived later.
How the Payment Schedule Works and Who It Affects
For people who don’t know much about how the payment system works, here’s how SSA sends out the money. If someone was born from the 1st to the 10th, they get their money on the second Wednesday.
Those with birthdays from the 11th to the 20th get paid on the third Wednesday, which is May 21 this time. And if someone was born after the 20th, they get their check on the fourth Wednesday, which will be May 28 in May 2025. So even though the payments are always on the same kind of day, the exact date can feel different every month, and sometimes that can make people feel like their money is late, even though it’s not.

Some people didn’t get affected by this late schedule at all. Anyone who started getting Social Security before May 1997 or gets both Social Security and SSI follows a different payment rule. These groups usually get paid either on the 1st or the 3rd day of the month, so the Wednesday plan doesn’t change anything for them.
For those who are worried about missing money, the SSA says they should wait at least three mailing days after the payment day before calling them. Also, most people around 99% now get their payments through direct deposit. That helps avoid a lot of problems and delays because the money just goes straight into the bank.
