But whether the day is a holiday or not completely depends on where you live.

In India, not all festivals are holidays everywhere. Each state decides its own list, so every year the holiday pattern changes. And this year is also not different, some states have off on August 16 while some don’t. Check out which ones do:
States With a Holiday
Some states will shut schools, banks, and government offices for Janmashtami. These include Gujarat, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, and Himachal Pradesh.
In these places, celebrations will be in full swing. Schools will put on plays showing Krishna’s childhood stories, hold devotional music programs, and organise traditional dance events. Government halls and community centres will host public functions, and the streets will be lively with processions and decorations.
States Without a Holiday
For others, August 16 will just be a normal working Saturday. States like Tripura, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala, Nagaland, Delhi, and Goa won’t have an official day off.

That doesn’t mean the festival will be ignored. Temples will still hold special prayers, and people will gather for small community celebrations. Some schools might still mark the day with small programs, but classes and work will go on as usual.
