The pension part of the PF can now be withdrawn only after 36 months. The EPFO said the changes are meant to protect retirement savings while still allowing access in emergencies. It said the revised rule will help members meet urgent financial needs “without compromising their retirement savings or pension entitlements.”

A big change is that members will no longer be able to withdraw their entire PF amount at once. At least 25% of the balance must remain in the account. Only 75% of the PF can be withdrawn after 12 months of unemployment. This will make sure  that the members continue to earn interest on the remaining money and do not run out of funds completely before retirement. This change encourages employees to think of their PF as long-term savings instead of emergency cash.

Under the new rules, anyone who loses a job will need to wait a year before taking out their final PF amount. Members who were previously allowed to withdraw both PF and pension parts after two months will now have to follow separate timelines. PF can be taken after 12 months and pension money can be accessed only after 36 months.

These changes are likely to affect millions of workers across India. Employees will need to plan their finances carefully and not rely solely on PF money for short-term needs.
