LAPD Shooting of Family Dog: The family of Jameson, a 2-year-old mixed-breed dog from Los Angeles, is heartbroken after he was shot and killed by LAPD officers in Canoga Park. His owner shared photos on Instagram after the shooting, and those pictures quickly became part of an online demand for answers. The post showed Jameson in happy moments, including one where he wore a New York Knicks T-shirt during the family’s celebration of the team’s NBA championship win. Local reports say the dog was a golden retriever, Saint Bernard, and poodle mix, and that the incident happened during a celebration after the Knicks’ title victory.
The family’s message was very painful and direct. They wrote, “On June 13th, 2026, just minutes after celebrating the @nyknicks championship, our dog Jameson was fatally shot by police. We are so distraught at the loss of our sweet boy, and want to spread the message of #JusticeForJameson. Jameson, I love you and miss you immensely.” That post drew a wave of support, sadness, and anger from people online.

The shooting happened on Saturday night in Canoga Park, in Los Angeles. Police said officers went to an apartment complex on Jordan Avenue after calls about loud celebrations and a woman screaming inside a unit. According to LAPD, officers arrived just before 9 p.m. and spoke with a woman while Jameson was nearby. They asked that the dog be secured. LAPD later said that when the apartment door opened again, the dog ran toward one of the officers, and that is when the shooting happened. The dog died at the scene. Police also said no people were hurt, and the matter is still being investigated.
The family pushes back
Jameson’s family does not accept the police version of events. Jeremiah Garcia said the family had been celebrating the Knicks’ win when officers arrived. He said he was away from home, watching the game and talking to his mother on FaceTime when the shooting happened. When he came back, he found Jameson dead. The family also said the dog was still wearing the Knicks shirt they had put on him for the celebration. They believe he was gentle and not dangerous.
As the photos spread, the hashtag #JusticeForJameson grew fast online. People shared grief, shock, and anger. One commenter wrote, “A similar situation happened to our dog last month as well. Prayers to you and your family. I am sorry for your loss Daisy girl please take care of Jameson in doggy heaven.”
Another said, “Please sue them. This is heartbreaking. If the officers were capable of handling the situation without deadly force, an innocent dog should not have lost its life. There needs to be accountability.”
A third added, “I’m so sorry to you and your family for this huge loss. This was one of the worst things I’ve ever seen. To see Jameson lying there while your mom just screamed and cried was absolutely heartbreaking. I cry every time I see the video pop up. Just so tragic and sad!!!!!!!”
