Car Loan Rates May 2026

Car Loan Interest Rates: June was a strong month for India’s passenger vehicle market. Retail sales rose by about 29% compared with last year, which was the fastest rise seen in three months. A big part of this growth came from cleaner fuel choices. CNG, hybrid and EV models together made up 40.35% of passenger vehicle sales, which is a record high. The sharp jump shows that more buyers are choosing cars that cost less to run and feel more future-ready.

This shift is not happening in a vacuum. Many people are now paying closer attention to fuel costs and the wider talk around ethanol blending and cleaner transport.

Car loans and EMI

For many buyers, the car loan is the bridge between wanting a car and actually driving one home. In India, car loan rates can vary a lot from lender to lender and from one borrower profile to another. Recent market examples show rates starting as low as 7.35% at some lenders and going up to around 14% or more in other cases. Paisabazaar’s car-loan page also shows several bank offers in the 10% to 15% range, which makes the final EMI very different from one loan to the next.

Banks usually offer flexible repayment periods for car loans, often from 1 year to 7 years. This gives borrowers more comfort while repaying the loan in instalments.

Borrowers can get a car loan of up to Rs. 1.5 crore in many cases. This amount may cover most or even the full on-road price of the vehicle. Most banks also keep EMIs at a manageable level by offering different tenure options for repayment.

EV Loans

Some banks now offer special loans for electric vehicles. These are often called green car loans. They are made to encourage people to buy eco-friendly cars. In some cases, the interest rate for EV loans is a little lower than normal car loans.

Used Car Loans

Used car loans usually cost more than loans for new cars. The interest rate is often higher, and it may fall somewhere between 11.00% and 15.70%, depending on the bank and the age of the car. Because of this, buyers should check the total cost before choosing a second-hand vehicle.

What Affects your EMI?

Credit Score

A score of 750 or above can help you get a lower interest rate, while a lower score may result in higher rates or tougher loan terms.

Loan Tenure

A shorter tenure means higher monthly EMIs but lower total interest. A longer tenure reduces your monthly EMI, but you will pay more interest overall.

Processing Fees

Banks may charge a processing fee of about 1% to 2% of the loan amount. Some also charge for early repayment, while others allow part-payments after a certain period.

A lower EMI rate usually means a lower monthly outgo, while a higher rate can stretch the same loan into a heavier burden. Paisabazaar’s car-loan guide also says EMI depends on the loan amount, tenure and interest rate.

Top Bank Interest Rates & EMIs

For a ₹10 Lakh loan over 5 years (60 months), typical EMIs depend on the lender:

Bank / Institution Interest Rate (p.a.) Estimated EMI (for ₹10 Lakh over 5 years)
Canara Bank Starting at 7.45% ₹20,022
Bank of Baroda 8.50% – 9.35% ₹20,517 – ₹20,913
ICICI Bank 8.40% onwards ₹20,468
SBI 8.70% onwards ₹20,661
HDFC Bank 8.30% onwards ₹20,419
Axis Bank 7.00% – 17.50% ₹19,801 – ₹25,123

Why Comparing before Borrowing is Important?

A five-year car loan can look simple at first, but the hidden weight sits in the EMI. Two loans with the same amount can feel very different if one has a lower rate and the other has a higher one.

That is why banks and NBFCs try to attract borrowers with different rates, flexible tenures and lower EMIs. Some lenders also offer quick processing, online applications and smaller documentation needs.
