Jamtara Cashew and Bamboo Craft: Jamtara in Jharkhand is getting attention for a new reason. Earlier, the district was known across India for matters that had little to do with farming or hand work. Now it is being placed on India’s trade map in a more direct way.
The Centre for Bamboo Craft and Cashew has named Jamtara under the Districts as Export Hubs, or DEH, initiative. This move links local items from the area to a larger system meant to push exports and widen reach.

A Press Information Bureau note from September 2, 2026 lists Jamtara, Jharkhand. In that list, it mentions “Bamboo Craft” and “Cashew” under the DEH effort.
The Centre’s Districts as Export Hubs initiative treats individual districts as units of export planning. Instead of relying only on established manufacturing centres, the programme seeks to identify products with export potential at the district level and build the ecosystem required to take them to larger markets.
According to the latest PIB document, the DEH initiative covered more than 770 districts as of January 2026. District-level committees are responsible for identifying export opportunities, addressing local bottlenecks and working with businesses and other stakeholders.

Why Cashew Is Important for Jamtara?
Cashew cultivation has given parts of Jamtara an agricultural identity that is quite different from the district’s popular image.
The Government of India’s ODOP portal identifies Jamtara’s cashews as a product associated with the district and notes that cashew cultivation provides an important source of income for local farmers.
Data published by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) shows that during FY 2025-26, India exported:
- 32,998.91 metric tonnes of cashew kernels, valued at US$265.08 million
- 77,806.41 metric tonnes of fresh/dried cashew nuts in shell, valued at US$114.12 million
- 3,001.82 metric tonnes of roasted/value-added cashew products, valued at US$24.62 million
- 38,648.74 metric tonnes of cashew shell liquid, valued at US$26.76 million
- APEDA lists Vietnam, the UAE, the Netherlands, Japan and Spain among major destinations for India’s cashew kernel exports in FY 2025-26.
Bamboo Craft
Cashew is only half of Jamtara’s emerging export story. The district has also been identified for bamboo craft, bringing traditional skills into the formal export-promotion framework.
Bamboo products can range from everyday utility items to furniture, baskets, mats and decorative products. The attraction for export markets is not simply the raw material but the craftsmanship and finished-product value added by local artisans. The latest PIB backgrounder specifically identifies Bamboo Craft and Cashew as Jamtara’s export-potential products under the DEH framework.
What Happens Next?
Being identified as an export-worthy product does not automatically mean that every product from the district is already being shipped overseas at scale.
The DEH model focuses on building the infrastructure and capabilities needed to make local businesses export-ready. District Export Promotion Committees also prepare District Export Action Plans (DEAPs) that identify products, infrastructure requirements, logistics challenges and possible interventions.
By March 2026, draft DEAPs were made for 590 districts. Out of that group, 249 district committees had formally adopted them.
In Jamtara, the next step is not just about making more cashew or bamboo goods. The bigger issue is whether a local supply chain can keep up with what buyers need, first outside the district, and later outside India.
India’s Cashew Exports Are Expanding
Jamtara’s timing is also tied to how India’s cashew sector keeps reaching buyers in other countries. IBEF, using government and industry figures, put cashew exports at US$379.19 million in FY2025-26. For FY2024-25, it reported US$337.14 million. This wider export picture helps explain why cashew producing districts can draw interest when policies push an export focus.
