With MCI, the country’s medical education regulator, introducing the revised syllabus for the bachelor’s degree programme in medicine from the next academic year, the focus will be on a range of topics like ethics and mental health issues.

Emphasizing on skills, the new curriculum will have students observing treatment at hospitals from their first year.

They will have clinical exposure right from the first year of the 4.5 years course plus internship.

The new syllabus will highlight certain aspects of doctor-patient interactions. Irrelevant chapters have been removed by the Medical Council of India or MCI. The course also includes Competency-based Integrated Curriculum for the students.

Changes to the course as follows:

Training on how to speak to and approach patients.

The syllabus is ready.

The final content is being proof-read.

Information on new diseases has been included.

MCI has removed Irrelevant chapters from the syllabus.

The revision process started in 2013.

Undergraduate medical syllabus was last revised in 1997.

New course content was approved by the Union health ministry in December last year.

What’s new in the revised syllabus?

The revised syllabus will make it mandatory for students to clear ‘must-know’ tests in all semesters.
