The censor board has stirred controversy around itself again. This has been happening since Pahlaj Nihalani started heading the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and some filmmakers have been at constant loggerheads with him.

It was on Tuesday that Nihalani ordered 48 cuts in the upcoming film Babumoshai Bandookbaaz that stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Bidita Bag in pivotal roles. The CBFC objected to certain scenes and use of cuss words in the film.

At the trailer launch of Secret Superstar on Wednesday, actor Aamir Khan, who is also producing the film that features Zaira Wasim, Meher Vij and him in the lead roles, said that the job of the CBFC is to certify films and not censor them.

He added that he hoped for things to change for the better soon.

“I don’t know how relevant it (censorship) is today. As far as my knowledge goes, the CBFC, in any case, isn’t supposed to censor, it is supposed to certify and grade”, the actor quoted.

Aamir’s words are bound to remind one of the Bombay High Court’s judgment on last year’s Udta Punjab vs CBFC battle. The court had told the CBFC last year that the board’s job was to certify films and not censor them.

Aamir went on to say, “That’s how we should proceed. That’s even Mr Shyam Benegal’s recommendation if I am not mistaken. So hopefully things will get better soon.”
