Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad’s student activists disrupted a seminar that had JNU student Umar Khalid, eminent film maker Sanjay Kak and Bimol Akoijam as speakers.

The two-day long seminar is organised by Wordcraft, the literary society of Ramjas College, on ‘Cultures of Protests’.

The members of ABVP, who opposed Khalid’s visit to the campus, reached the campus earlier and sloganeered ‘Vanda Materam’ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’

The campus administration cancelled the participation of Umar Khalid and JNU student Shehla Rashid due to the pressure from the right-wing students wing.

“The protests by the right-wing student group turned violent and organisers of the event were locked inside the conference room while a session was on. They started pelting stones and throwing bricks at the windows,” a student was quoted by The Hindu as saying.

Delhi Police had earlier told that they will not guarantee the safety to the organisers and speakers of the event, a student alleged.

DU students alleged that more than 100 right wing activists were gathered at the Ramjas College with hockey sticks and stones threatening of large scale violence.

Khalid, in his Facebook post, alleged that ABVP goons threatened the organisers against the seminar.

“‘We will disfigure your face in a way that you will be unrecognisable’ – an ABVP goon to one of the organisers of today’s seminar at Ramjas College! They also threatened and abused teachers,” read his post.

Khalid was scheduled to speak on the topic ‘The war in Adivasi areas’.

In 2015, the screening of a documentary film on Muzaffarnagar Riots was stalled by ABVP activists in Kirori Mal College.
