The human resources department ministry has approved a proposal to hike the fees in National Institutes of Technology (NITs) from ₹70,000 to ₹1.25 lakh per annum. This will be levied for new entrants. Similarly, the fees for the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) have been increased from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 per semester.

Minister Smriti Irani chaired a meeting with the HRD on Friday, during which proposals forwarded by the NIT and IISER administration was accepted. According to an official, the reason for increasing costs is to provide additional resources to the institutions in order to ensure a higher quality of education.

“A decision has been taken to raise the fees at NITs for undergraduate as well as post graduate courses for which ₹70,000 was charged. Now the students who join NITs will have to pay ₹1.25 per year for these courses,” an official from the ministry told NDTV, “The fee hike would only for new students who get admission and not for those who are already studying.”

Earlier, the ministry had hiked the fees in the Indian Institutes of Technology as well from ₹90,000 to ₹2 lakh per annum. A new decision has been taken to waiver the complete fees for differently-abled students, those from SC and ST communities and students whose families earn an annual income of less than ₹1 lakh. Two-thirds of the fees will be waivered for students from families that earn less than ₹5 lakh a year.
