Alamo Day 2024 (US): Alamo Day, held on March 6, commemorates the Battle of the Alamo’s conclusion. The Texas Revolution’s pivotal Battle of the Alamo ended brutally on March 6, 1836, 13 days after sporadic fighting. The Mexicans retook the fort and slaughtered most of the Texans, including Davy Crockett.
Alamo Day History
Spanish settlers built the Alamo in 1718 in San Antonio. After insurgent Texans took the Alamo Mission in December, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna attacked it on February 23, 1836. Approximately 1,000 Mexican forces seized the fort and erected guns.
Two weeks of firing between the two sides resulted in a few casualties. Captains William Travis and James Bowie stayed put despite being outnumbered. Volunteers guarding the Alamo included doctors, farmers, and Tennessee militiaman Davy Crockett.
The last attack occurred before dawn on March 6. Mexican forces entered the enclosure after breaking the north wall, rousing several Texans. The 90-minute fight includes hand-to-hand combat.
Bowie, Travis, and Crockett were killed, although how and when are unclear. Santa Anna executed all inmates, including those Texans who surrendered. Few individuals survived, mostly women and children. Some hundred Mexicans died, say historians.
Sam Houston and his men defeated Santa Anna’s army at San Jacinto on April 21 after Mexican soldiers occupied the fort from March to May. “Remember the Alamo” was chanted as they stormed, and Houston won Texas freedom. The US annexed Texas over a decade later, in 1845.
The fort housed U.S. Army troops and supplies for years afterward. Texas bought the Alamo in 1883 and acquired the adjoining four acres. The Alamo, a national icon of resilience and resistance, draws 2.5 million visitors annually.
