Allow people with valid reasons to deposit demonetised notes: SC asks govt

The Supreme Court has asked the government and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday to provide an opportunity to the people who couldn’t submit demonetised bank notes before the December 30, 2016 deadline.

“If someone has a genuine reason, you cannot deny him the opportunity to deposit the money,” a bench led by Chief Justice JS Khehar told solicitor general Ranjit Kumar. Kumar took two weeks time to respond on the behalf of the government on the matter.

“You cannot take away someone’s property. If it’s my money and I can establish that, then you cannot deprive me of my property,” Chief Justice Khehar said. The bench was hearing petitions challenging the government’s notification that prohibited citizens from depositing old notes.

Various cases of people finding demonetised notes have appeared. “We are also hearing only genuine cases where we are satisfied deposit could have been made but cannot be done because there is no window,” said the Chief Justice.
