Amazon Settlement: Amazon has agreed to pay a huge $2.5 billion settlement after the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) accused the company of tricking people into signing up for Prime without their permission. This is one of the biggest fines ever against a US company.

What the FTC Said?

The FTC filed a lawsuit in June 2023 saying Amazon used tricky designs called “dark patterns,” to push millions of customers into Prime subscriptions. The regulators said that once people were signed up, it became very hard to cancel. The FTC described the process as an “Iliad” that confused and frustrated customers.

The settlement will help about 35 million customers who were charged for Prime without meaning to. Officials have not yet said exactly how or when people will get their money back.

Amazon initially defended itself by saying that its subscription system was clear and better than most. The company added that it improved the cancellation process. But the FTC said the evidence showed a different story.

“The evidence showed that Amazon used sophisticated subscription traps designed to manipulate consumers into enrolling in Prime, and then made it exceedingly hard for consumers to end their subscription,” the FTC said.

The FTC added that Amazon created “confusing and deceptive” interfaces that tricked people into signing up and made quitting “complex and difficult.” The company agreed to make a clear and easy button to decline Prime and to make canceling simple.

A spokesperson for Amazon said, “We work incredibly hard to make it clear and simple for customers to both sign up or cancel their Prime membership, and to offer substantial value for our many millions of loyal Prime members around the world. We will continue to do so.”

How will the Settlement works?

Amazon must also show clear information before charging customers. The company must always display the price and tell users about auto-renewal on the Prime sign-up page.

The settlement came after a court confirmed that Prime subscriptions are covered by consumer protection laws. The court found that Amazon illegally got customers’ billing information before fully explaining the subscription terms.

Of the $2.5 billion $1 billion will go as civil penalties to the government and $1.5 billion will go directly to the consumers who were affected.
