Amid media reports and rumours that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is seriously ill, there’s renewed worry about the next successor to run a nuclear-armed country. The reports about the 36-year-old leader’s poor health started doing the rounds ever since he reportedly missed a state celebration on April 15 to mark the commemoration of the birth anniversary of his late grandfather, Kim il Sung. The North Korean leader, who is a heavy smoker and obese, underwent went an operation that left him in a ‘vegetative state’, according to some reports.

This has renewed talks about his successor. According to a report of The Week, the family’s mythical ‘Paektu’ bloodline, named after the highest peak on the Korean Peninsula, is said to give only direct family members the right to rule the nation. That makes Kim Yo Jong, younger sister of Kim Jong Un, the potential successor in case he dies.

  • Kim Yo Jong is the only daughter of Kim Jong II and reportedly 30-year-old. There is no confirmed report about her place of birth and age. “According to the US Treasury Department, she was born in Pyongyang on September 26, 1989 but South Korea’s intelligence service says that she was born in 1987,” The Free Press Journal reported.
  • Just like her brothers, Kim Yo Jong – the youngest child of Kim Jong II – attended school in Bern, Switzerland.
  • She went by the alias Pak Mi Hyang and took ballet classes in Switzerland before returning to North Korea in 2000 or 2001.
  • Kim Yo Jong completed her studies Kim II Sung University in Pyongyang and reportedly did not make any public appearance till 2010. She attended her father’s funeral in 2011.
  • Some media reports suggest that she was being groomed for a leadership role all these years by her aunt Kim Kyong Hui.
  • She is now in charge of North Korea’s propaganda affairs and responsible for protecting her brother’s reputation.
  • She was named an alternate member of the powerful politburo earlier this month – a clear indication about her growing power in the country.
  • Kim Yo Jong has accompanied her brother at various important summits and the made people believe that he is essentially North Korea’s No. 2 official.
