Andhra Pradesh Foundation Day 2023: Date, History, Celebration, Wishes, and More

Andhra Pradesh Foundation Day 2023: The southern state of Andhra Pradesh was established on November 1, 1956, following years of calls for the Telugu-speaking regions of the former Hyderabad state to be merged with Andhra state. The State Reorganisation Act of 1956 led to the formation of the new state of Andhra Pradesh.

Before the secession of Telangana as a new state, the state celebrated Andhra Pradesh formation day for nearly 60 years. Following the election of a Jagan Mohan Reddy and the YSRCP-led government in 2019, Andhra Pradesh resumed celebrating Andhra Pradesh Day.

Andhra Pradesh Foundation Day History

Andhra Pradesh was part of the Madras Province during the colonial period. During this time, there was a strong campaign for the region to become an independent state.

After this, in 1953, the regions of Rayalaseema and Andhra were carved out to form a new state. Telangana was introduced in 1956, while Andhra Pradesh came into existence. Andhra Pradesh is the first state to be founded on linguistic grounds. This state is recognised as the first state to be founded on a linguistic premise.

The credit belongs to the great leader Potti Sriramulu, who participated in the hunger strike and enabled his voice to be heard in Delhi through his great sacrifice. He died after 56 days of fighting for a separate Andhra state, which sparked rioting in the state and left the then-prime minister with no choice but to establish the state on October 1, 1953. Because of his contribution to the liberation of Andhra Pradesh from Tamil Nadu, he is regarded as an immortal being.

In contrast, following India’s independence, the Nizams of Hyderabad have preserved the city’s autonomy by avoiding its incorporation into the nation. The Indian government compelled Hyderabad to merge with India, establishing the state of Telangana (now known as Hyderabad) after Nizams refused to comply with a variety of consultations from Indian leaders. On November 1, 1956, the Government of India merged Hyderabad with Andhra at the suggestion of Andhra leaders, paving the way for Andhra Pradesh to become a part of the linguistic state. Since then, the state of Andhra Pradesh has observed the state formation day on November 1.

People in the Telangana region who were unable to assimilate with Andhra due to differences in customs and traditions fought for almost 60 years to establish a separate state, and on June 2, 2014, they finally succeeded, leaving Andhra Pradesh to return to its original state as separated from Madras Presidency.

Telangana Division

After a few years, the clamour for establishing Telangana as a separate state increased. This ultimately led to the division of Andhra Pradesh. In addition, as a result, the Telegu Desam Party of the time refused to observe November 1 as the Formation Day. This was due to the separation of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. In 2014, N Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, declared that Nava Nirman Deeksha would be celebrated annually. The dates designated for this were the 2nd through 8th of June.

Thus, the government designated June 2 as the day to commemorate the division of the state. It was done to reflect regionally the government’s determination to restore the state. Therefore, the 8th of June marked the formation of the first government since the division of Andhra Pradesh. Later in 2019, the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy administration took over the entire state. Under his authority, the Andhra Pradesh Formation Day was once again celebrated on November 1st, as in the past.

Thus, the Andhra Pradesh government has resumed celebrating November 1 as Andhra Pradesh Formation Day after a hiatus of six years. In the past, the state has experienced both lows and highs. When Andhra Pradesh was under British dominion, it was a part of the Madras Province. In India, the first-ever linguistic state was established in November 1956, when Telangana became the first state to be created as a result of a rigorous movement.

Andhra Pradesh Foundation Day 2023 Celebrations
