Historical Significance
In 1950, the Madras Province became the Madras State, and the Government of India expanded to include all of modern-day Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema, the Malabar region of northern Kerala, and Bellary of southern Canara. Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema were separated in 1953 to create the state of Andhra Pradesh, while the districts of South Canara and Bellary were merged to form the state of Mysore. In 1956, the Malabar District was merged with the Travancore-Cochin State to create Kerala.
In accordance with the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, the Tamil-speaking population of Travancore-Cochin was incorporated into Madras state, which was previously a part of Travancore-Cochin.
