Anura Kumara Dissanayake was inaugurated as Sri Lanka’s ninth president on Monday, evoking hope for economic recovery and an end to corruption.
The 56-year-old leader of the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna party, sworn in by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, defeated Sajith Premadasa in the recent election.
Drawing wide support from young voters, Dissanayake’s campaign focused on combating corruption and reforming political culture, addressing the demands for systematic change following the crippling economic crisis of 2022.
