Supplement to OAS 2023-2024

In my most recent post, I discussed the Canada Pension Plan and its associated disability benefits. The pension you receive from these contribution-based benefits is directly proportional to the amount you have contributed. In the present discourse, I shall provide an overview of several supplementary benefits that hold significance for the elderly: OAS is Old Age Security.

Old Age Security is a residence-based and age-based program, as its eligibility requirements stipulate that individuals must be at least 65 years old to begin receiving benefits. For the benefit of being residence-based, years of continuous residency in Canada after reaching the age of 18 are mandatory. For full pension eligibility, you must have resided in Canada continuously for a minimum of ten years prior to submitting your OAS application, and for eligibility, you must have done so for at least the number of years beginning after your 18th birthday.

In Canada, what is Old Age Security?

Old Age Security (OAS), the largest pension program in Canada, provides taxable monthly payments to eligible residents and citizens upon reaching the age of 65. It is supported through general tax revenues acquired by the government; direct contributions are not required. In contrast to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and employee pension plans, one can remain eligible for Old Age Security (OAS) benefits notwithstanding their employment background.

Who Matures for the Canadian OAS?

The eligibility criteria for OAS benefits are subject to variation depending on one’s place of residence in Canada:

With respect to citizens of Canada

  • A minimum age of 65 is required to qualify for Canadian OAS.
  • An authorized Canadian resident is required to qualify for Canadian OAS.
  • One must have been a resident of this country for a minimum of ten years since turning eighteen.

For individuals not residing in Canada

  • A minimum age of 65 is required to qualify for Canadian OAS.
  • You were required to have been a citizen or lawful resident of Canada the day prior to your departure.
  • It was mandatory to be aged 18 or older and have lived in this country for a minimum of twenty years.

Dates of OAS Pension Payments in 2023

The OAS Allowance is a monthly benefit provided to spouses or companions (60 to 64 years old) of LI Old Age pension recipients. You are eligible for these benefits based on your marital status and annual income. As with the OAS pension, the maximum monthly payment for the GIS, Allowance, and Allowance for the Survivor is adjusted quarterly. Below are the OAS Pension payment dates for 2023.

Application Process for OAS Supplement

It is not mandatory to apply for the Old Age Security pension. Service Canada will provide you with one of the following the month following your 64th birthday:

  • A letter informing the recipient that enrollment was selected for them by default. If the letter contains accurate information, you may proceed without submitting an OAS application at this time. You will automatically receive your OAS Pension payment 2023 in the month following your 65th birthday.
  • An application and a letter indicating your prospective eligibility for OAS. You must then apply for OAS promptly. It is necessary to complete and return the form enclosed with the letter to Service Canada. In order for payments to commence the month following your 65th birthday and for your application to be reviewed, you must submit OAS Supplement form 2023-24 without delay.
