Asaduddin Owaisi lashes out at BJP over NRC list

AIMIM head Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday, August 31st 2019, hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party over the National Register of Citizenship (NRC) and the slowing down of GDP to 5 per cent in the first quarter of FY 19-20.

“BJP should learn a lesson. They should stop asking for NRC throughout the country in terms of Hindus and Muslims. They should learn from what has happened in Assam. The so-called myth of illegal migrants has been busted. Many people in Assam have told me that the parents’ names are included, but names of their children are excluded. For example, Mohammad Sanaullah, he has served in Army. His case is pending in High Court. I am sure that he will also get justice,” Owaisi said as quoted by India Today.

Over 19 lakh people will have to prove their citizenship after their names were excluded from the crucial citizens’ list, aimed at identifying legal residents and weed out illegal immigrants from Assam. 3.11 crore have been included in the list. 19,06,677 people have been excluded from the final list, which names 3,11,21,004 people as Indian citizens.

On the GDP front, Severe slowdown in manufacturing activity in the country pulled India’s GDP growth rate in first quarter (Q1) ended June down to 5 per cent, marking the fourth successive quarter of decline in growth on the trot.

From 8 per cent during Q1 of 2018-19 to 5 per cent in this quarter, the GDP has fallen by three per cent in barely a year.

The GDP growth figures came on the day when the government went on overdrive to prop-up growth by announcing a mega merger of public sector banks (PSBs). Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has been announcing a slew of growth-inducing measures in the recent days.
